Pet Disaster Planning
Pets are family too, and planning ahead is the best way to protect them during hurricanes or severe weather. Hillsborough County provides pet-friendly shelters, but these should be considered a last resort. Ideally, plan where your pets will stay if you and your family need to evacuate, and check local resources for the most up-to-date shelter information.
Pet-Friendly Shelters
If you must use a pet-friendly shelter, keep in mind:
- Shelters usually accommodate dogs and cats only.
- Space is limited and pets are often housed separately from their owners.
- Owners are responsible for their pet's care, including feeding, cleaning, and walking, usually scheduled twice a day.
Build a Pet Disaster Kit
Prepare a kit specifically for your pets to ensure they have everything needed during an emergency:
- Sturdy crate or carrier large enough to stand up and turn around
- Up-to-date vaccination records, microchip info, and county registration
- Photo of you and your pet together
- Food and water for at least 7 days, plus bowls
- Leash, collar, and muzzle (if needed)
- Pet medications
- Toys, blankets, or familiar items for comfort
Plan for Large Animals
If you own livestock or other large animals, create a detailed hurricane plan for their safety. Resources and guidance are available through the UF/IFAS Extension for preparing farms and ranches for storms.
