Make a Plan: Protecting Your Family Before the Storm
Disasters can strike when we least expect them, and your family may not be together when it happens. That’s why having a clear plan is one of the most important steps you can take. Knowing how to stay in touch, where to meet, and what to do can make all the difference.
Start the Conversation
Talk with your family, friends, or household members about how you’ll handle emergencies. Some questions to guide your plan include:
- How will I get emergency alerts and updates?
- Where will I shelter if needed?
- What’s my evacuation route?
- How will I communicate with family if we’re separated?
- Do I need to update my emergency kit?
Plan for Unique Needs
Every household is different. As you prepare, think about your daily routines, special responsibilities, and who may need extra help. Consider:
- Ages of household members
- Care needs for children, seniors, or anyone with disabilities
- Medical requirements (prescriptions, equipment, etc.)
- Dietary restrictions
- Pets or service animals
- Languages spoken and cultural or religious needs
- Locations you visit often (work, school, etc.)
Write It Down

Practice Together
The best plan only works if everyone remembers it. Run through your plan as a household — practice where to go, how to communicate, and what to do so it becomes second nature.
