Riverwalk is expanding! The project is funded by a $24-million federal BUILD (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) grant. The expansion will continue northward up the river, connecting the west side of the Hillsborough to the Downtown area. It will include an additional 12 miles of walking path to reach Columbus Drive. (fox13news.com) The Minaret reported this project “revolves around the ideals that the mayor has been promoting since her election: redeveloping certain communities will create a more diverse city with better access to areas to live and work.” The expansion will help diverse Tampa communities connect with a free transit option to the heart of Downtown, really bringing the city together. It will connect three designated Opportunity Zone neighborhoods to Downtown. Local leaders anticipate safer streets, more affordable housing, small business growth, new local job opportunities, and innovative ways to experience the waterfront. This project will provide a safe mobility option for people to commute by bike or foot to the University of Tampa and Ybor City along with Downtown.
Just around the corner, the Renaissance at West River was the first building recently constructed in an area previously riddled with high crime and low-income housing. The Renaissance is a 62-plus apartment community with income restrictions. The Riverwalk expansion is underway and expected to be completed in late 2027.
